Everybody here hating on tradition but our family has unintentionally made our own traditions at christmas. Beef jerkey and kinder surprise in our stockings. Drinking baileys temptations while decorating the tree. And listening to johnny mathis while opening presents christmas morning. What's so bad about some traditions?
@PunnyBaker, I’m so glad you said this. So many people nowadays see all traditions to be outdated and dumb. I would argue that most traditions have a very important meaning, you just need to put in the effort to try and understand it. Just like in your examples, those traditions have no technical purpose, but it’s fun and calls for family bonding. What isn’t there to like about that?
If there truly is a meaningless tradition, then by all means go ahead and break it. But try and understand the true purpose of it before you do so.
@PunnyBaker, tradition gives people something to look forward to. I think your Christmas sounds awesome
@PunnyBaker, the problem with tradition is when following the tradition becomes more important than the tradition itself. When there’s no examination of whether the tradition is good, but rather just blind obedience.
Arranged marriages are an excellent example of traditions followed because they’re tradition rather than because they’re good.
@Kyle Ron, some are dumb but most others like the wedding dress being white are pretty much harmless every member of my family picks out a new ornament for the tree every year and my mother picks a new house decoration it’s a fun time also we still do the elf on a shelf because it’s fun to see how and where we can hide it
@I Are Lebo, yeah I definitely see that. My wedding was a mix of traditional and non-traditional. I had the standard church and reception hall setup but not out of forced tradition but because I actually like it but I also had rock music and the lotr soundtrack playing at the official ceremony as well.
I definitely think if you are going to follow some form of tradition you should have a practical and personal reason to do so but others shouldnt hate on a tradition purely for it being tradition.
@PunnyBaker, it comes from an attitude of forced non conformity. They hate being told what to do to such an extent that they no longer care if what they’re being told is good or not.
@PunnyBaker, traditions aren’t bad, What’s bad is following one for no reason other than because other people always have.
It would be nice to meet the feral child that gets by without tradition.
Where would we be without tradition? We'd be as shaky as... a FIDDLER ON A ROOF!
Sounds like some dumb pseudo-intellectual babble. Traditions are set to have meaning for something that has no meaning to someone outside your group. My friends and I spray fart each other’s pillow during new year and see who gets a pink eye first. Why we do it? Nunya damn business. By the way, we are all still very much alive
Scientifically, traditions are an idiot thing.
@a boy named Toobs, Maybe, but humans are not purely scientific
Dont buy in, its useless like 90% of the time
@Guy Fawkes, thats why we have to circumsise
@injit, i dont think anyone has to save for the jews. But typically yeah, it used to be healthier because people couldnt clean as often or as well but now its basically useless
Is it "peer" pressure though
