Im glad they put feminist in quotation marks acknowledging that the tumblr feminists don’t represent actual feminism
@K1l, tumblr feminists are just as much a feminist as a isis member is a muslim.
@BlazingBowman, this is true, but not for the reasons you think.
Any self applied label is as valid or invalid as any other. An ideology exists solely in the minds of its followers.
Tumblr feminists ARE feminists. ISIS extremists ARE Muslims. The Westborough Baptist Church ARE Christians. Being a part of the fringe of a group doesn't make them not a part of that group unless the rest of the group rises up to cast them out.
If someone claims to speak for you, and they say things you disagree with or condemn, but you say nothing, then they ARE speaking for you.
@K1l, can you please give me an example of an 'actual' feminist?
I'm assuming you don't consider people like Big Red or Anita Sarkeesian to be 'actual' feminists on account of their thinly veiled hatred for men and rampant double standards, but who would you consider?
@BlazingBowman, that's not the point. The point is that tumblr feminists are terrible, whereas regular feminists are just people trying to make life better for women. Like how isis members are muslim, but other muslims are just normal people who follow a certain religion.
@I Are Lebo, well sajd
@I Are Lebo, The women who fought for women to have the right to vote and have equal pay to man. And the ones today are the ones actually joining politics and taking jobs that are typically male-dominated instead of just talking about it. But yeah, I definitely don’t consider anyone you mentioned.
@I Are Lebo, Basically the ones who are proving that women are just as capable as men without protesting about it and degrading men
@K1l, so, a small fraction of self-identified feminists then. This just reeks of the no-true-scotsman-fallacy.
@PB2, Definition of feminism by merriam webster: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes
I don’t see how what I said is like the true scotsman fallacy. I didn’t really change the definition or meaning ot feminism. The meaning of feminism is equality in politics, economic amd social equality the sexes. Women who are going out and joining politics and taking more jobs are contributing to gender equality in the workplace and economy. Just cuz they don’t hold signs about it, it doesn’t mean they’re not feminists.
@K1l, Really good points, I always find it depressing when people on this app constantly claim to hate feminists and feminism. Feminism simply fights for equality between men and women, it's only has "fem" in the name because when the movement started our society (America) was extremely sexist. The people who talk out in really rude and sexist ways now and call themselves feminists are nowhere close to the majority, unfortunately they're the vocal minority so it seems like they're the majority. I don't blame the people on this app for not understanding that, especially since most of them are young and have really only seen a society that is much more equal than when feminism started, and only witnessed these "feminists" who are just angry jerks looking to act like the victim and bully others to feel better about themselves.
@K1l, also a good way to look at how the vocal minority works on a small scale is to look at controversial (but not rude or mean) comments on this app. Sometimes a comment will spark an argument and have around 30 responses saying that they're wrong (to put it politely) and just looking at that you'd think "wow the users of funny pics really hate (whatever)" but sometimes that comment will have like 200 likes and only 17 dislikes. Although people didn't want to argue about it or get into debates with unreasonable people, they still believe in what that commenter said. So the people responding and arguing are the minority but they're so gosh darn loud about it they seem like the majority.
@Blasphemy is Fun, this is a very valid point. The fact that some of the rude cunts out there use feminism as their box to spew hatred from does not mean that most feminists, or feminism as a whole, stand for this victim mentality.
Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), as a movement, feminism is pretty much finished in the western world. There are no rights that men have here that women don't, and in fact there are a couple rights that women have that men don't. For example, in America men do not have the right to opt out of parenthood. Whether on the abortion issue, or about custody, men are second class compared to women, being far more likely to lose custody and/or be sued for alimony.
@K1l, I don't take anything in the Miriam Webster dictionary at face value. This is the same organization that legitimized words like twerk and manspreading, and added to the definition of literally to mean it's own antonym.
@Blasphemy is Fun, I totally agree I had the same disagreement with I Are Lebo a few weeks ago, it was very interesting and a fun debate. I think it’s easy for people, particularly on apps such as these, to get sucked into the idea that the community they have online accurately reflects the outside world.
@ skh159, I think it's far more interesting discussing things with people that disagree with me than it is to debate with people that share my point of view.
I think when people go "let's just agree to disagree" it's often a sign of cowardice. When people take disagreements personally, it weakens them. If one isn't willing to defend their convictions, they're probably pretty weak.
Of course the other side to that is when you find yourself arguing with someone who isn't listening, in which case "let's agree to disagree" is more of a polite way of saying "I'm done, fück off."
Not that any of that applies to you, I just find it interesting.
@PB2, I'm sorry it took me this long to reply to you, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to say until now.
The no true Scotsman fallacy absolutely applies in this case, as it does in every case of an organization of self labelled people without a central leadership. There is no one definition of feminism, because every definition is contested by people who call themselves feminists. Likewise, it becomes impossible to argue with a feminist, because every single piece of evidence you can bring up of a feminist organization doing something harmful, whether it's shutting down or coopting men's rights talks, distorting truth and statistics, or even outright violence, any feminist can simply distance themselves from those actions by claiming "oh those aren't REAL feminists. I don't stand for such behaviour".
This is why modern feminism in it's organized form is worse than useless. There is absolutely no accountability. There are people who cloak themselves in the Feminism label and use it to
spread lies, bigotry, and blatant double standards. This is why so many people still think the wage gap is real, in spite of it having been debunked many times. This is why people still think domestic violence is a mainly, or even purely female issue when all of the statistics show that the rate of abuse between men and women is fairly even. This is why today men are being accused of rape left and right and having their lives ruined without proof, yet male rape victims are still almost universally ignored and disparaged.
Feminists argue that women are oppressed while actively attempting to oppress men. The double standard is unacceptable, and is no different than the Black Lives Matters group, which actively supported a group of black teenagers who kidnapped and tortured a mentally handicapped man for no reason other than because he was white.
There is absolutely nothing to distinguish feminists who support the mass castration of men from feminists who simply want equal treatment.
@I Are Lebo, yeah but every Christian will say that Westboro Baptists are very wrong on almost everything they say. They try to cast them out, everyone just doesn’t listen.
@Child Slapper, I have not once ever heard or seen any major or minor Christian organization ever condemn the ideology of the Westborough Baptist Church. Not once. And definitely not the Pope.
Besides, saying someone is wrong about how they act as Christians is not the same thing as saying "those are not Christians."
This feels personal to the uploader
"It's about equality!"
Then why isn't it called humanism?
Hehe, checkmate feminists.
@Punny lad, because it's about equality for women, since in many places and/or situations women are less equal than men.
@Depressed Panda, its a group strictly and only for women's rights. It has nothing at all to do with male rights except as a hinderance. True equality shows up in movements like the Egalitarian movement which incidentally predates feminism.
@PB2, you’re technically correct, but as panda said, women are less equal than men in many situations. As such, feminism can focus on giving women more equality in those situations, without just pushing for more rights across every single situation regardless of the status quo. Good feminism anyway.
@PB2, which is why the vast majority of shelters built in the USA for battered spouses or for rape survivors will not help male victims.
@I Are Lebo, despite, statistically between 40-45% of all victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse/assault being male, they are all denied entrances to shelters that are overwhelmingly and exclusively for women. Its a true travesty, and one very few people acknowledge.
Also fun to note that I was downvoted without anyone actually arguing it, and it being entirely factually correct. Some people just don't deal with cognitive dissonance well.
@PB2, I briefly entertained the thought of working with a men's rights group before realizing that many MRA's suffer the same problems as feminists, with militant members derailing things, with the addition of radical feminists feeling quite free to do anything to shut down talks on men's rights. I haven't faced much discrimination for being a man or for being white, though I have of course run into bigots.
I tackle this issue on a much smaller scale. If someone hits me, I hit them back. I don't care what age, gender, race, or orientation they are. I go for the shoulder to reduce risk of causing injury, and I won't instigate or initiate the violence. If I ever get married I WILL have a prenup, it's not open to negotiation. The career I'm going into isn't much affected by these issues, so I'm not concerned about workplace relations. And in all other facets of my life my goal is to remain assertive and honest.
I'm not much of an academic, which is fortunate for me, because that seems
to be where a majority of these feminists go to spout their bullshït.
It's pointless to argue with someone that isn't willing to listen to reason. That's why they STILL bring up the wage gap in spite of it being debunked a million times.
There was an article in my local paper about it a couple days ago where they showed that the survey that came to the 75% figure actually counted fields where women were paid more than men to be equal pay. The specific field mentioned escapes me, but in that field women were paid 36% more than men on average, and this study saw that as equal pay. There was literally no option in the study for women to be paid more than men. The highest option for women was equal.
You can't combat this kind of manipulation, because they aren't interested in equality or about women. The sole goal that every feminist actively pursues is the propagation of Feminism.
That's why you have cunts like Anita Sarkeesian who actually say that women deciding for themselves what
is right for themselves is wrong and hurts other women. "Making the patriarchy work for you may help you in the short term, but it doesn't help feminism."
There's no doubt that Feminism is what these feminists want to strengthen. Not women. Rape Culture and the Patriarchy are feminist delusions specifically designed to keep women afraid, because scared women will turn to the feminist dogma.
We want equality but the man has to pay for dinner!
@hasher22 , and hold the door, be the last one off the sinking ship or out of a burning building, or get sent into military service by the draft
Note: I stole this meme from the internet, like how I reap souls from the Earth
And then they laugh at your spelling.
Kinda wish the scene happened this way instead
Logic and reason seem very aggressive today.
Is this from something?
If so, does anyone know? Or how to best search for the source?
@D4rthbob, After a quick google search, it appears to be from a movie called “Seven Psychopaths.”
@D4rthbob, seven psychopaths. Great film
@moodizz, the same guy made In Brudge
If you liked seven psychopaths, id highly recommend that.
@moodizz, yep, good movie
