Jesus christ guys, cultural appropriation isnt real. Its not a real thing. There's disrespecting a culture and then theres trying to take part in a culture. They are not the same.
@Ginger Incorporated, agreed. Like I think there’s a difference. I’m white for example but sometimes I wear the designer surgical masks that were a fashion trend starting in Japan. No big deal. I can wear whatever the Fvck I want thank you very much. However something like what Logan Paul did where he wore the traditional garb and ran around Japan making racist remarks- that’s different and definitely not ok. But who gives a shjt if white peoples wear dreads. Every race has been oppressed at some point. And to be fair society has fought so hard for all races to be equal and now we’re just isolating ourselves with this “cultural appropriation” crap? It’s just undoing all of MLK, Rosa Parks and others’ work.
@Midnite St0rm, exactly my thoughts. What logan did was disrespectful. But if someone wanted to legit dress that way and go to japan and get immersed in the culture, then i see nothing wrong with that.
@Ginger Incorporated, I agree
@Ginger Incorporated, there’s actually a fascinating video essay on this very topic called “ Pocahontas was a mistake” or something on YouTube for free by Lindsay Ellis
It’s really fascinating
@liberachi , what exactly does it say?
@Ginger Incorporated, its about how cultural appropriation isn’t exactly as cut and dry as everyone thinks it is, and shows how cultural appropriation changes depending on context, culture, and time period through the lens of Disney movies
@Ginger Incorporated, It's just black culture hating on the Kardashians and the like, they've been called Culture Vultures for ages now.
@Ginger Incorporated, trying to take part in a culture implies that you acknowledge the culture you're trying to take part of. Wearing a kimono in japan is cool. Wearing a kimono in America and saying you got it from Japan is cool. Wearing a Kimono is America and saying you invented it is not cool. When people are calling something out for being appropriated, it's usually because there was no acknowledgement of the culture it came from
@Traitor , sure i could see that. However, i feel that if you take something from another culture you would more than likely know where it came from. Like dreads. We know where dreads came from. So its really not a big deal. And when people call something cultural appropriation, most people from that culture dont care. I dont see people from the culture thats getting "appropriated" getting mad. Its people who get mad for them.
@Ginger Incorporated, the simplest answer to all of this is. “Don’t be a djck to other cultures”
@Optical Nudist, actually the simplest answer is “don’t be a díck to anybody”
@Midnite St0rm, yeah pretty much
Ugh. Humans are dumb.
@DiSoNeGuY, what really hurts is the amount of likes he got
@DiSoNeGuY, Just modern humans, I’m sure nobody in Africa gave two shjts about how the Vikings wore their hair back in the day...
What’s that I smell? It’s a double standard
It's a power grab and I'm not having it. Fvck your race and Fvck you. There's no law that says I have to care. So I don't. All humans are garbage. Filthy animals with a higher than deserved opinion about themselves.
So by this logic, I can say and do whatever I please because I'm Jewish and they've been oppressed far longer AND in much worse ways than any african.
@crustybucket, you should get free bread and air fresheners, to apologize, for you know, the things.
Could you guys not squint when the sun is in your eyes. As an Asian I find this offensive lol
"Naturally forms"..... I've know plenty of people with dreads, both black and white, and nobody's hair naturally forms dreadlocks. Get a fvcking grip
We need a new plague
@troubled panda, amen
@troubled panda, the anti-vaxxers are slowly helping us with that.
Only the coolest monkey in the jungle can wear dread locks
@FriscosGreatest, best comment today!!
I feel like half of the people in those comments are being sarcastic, but the other half haven’t picked up on it because that’s actually what they believe.
Dreadlocks were originally worn by the ancient Egyptians so....
@Jet Star, probably goes back to australiopithicus but Egyptian works too
(laughs in Singaporean as I sit back with my friends who are each from a different race from one and other)
@Repost Counter, the more I read about Singapore the more I love it.
so, the person who commented in pink is stupid and wrong. but i think cultural appropriation is real. if any of you remember the kim possible episode where her mission outfit became high fashion and everyone started wearing it so Kim wore it to school and Bonnie was like 'i know you don't think you can pull this look off' and Kim was sad because it was HER look. It's like that. The issue isn't that some other culture is doing your thing. It's that their doing your thing, calling it something else, and telling you that you can't do your own thing. With locs (because most black people don't call them dreads) i think it's fine for anyone to do it, as long as the culture is acknowledge. Some black people get really upset when non-black people wear them because for years black people were told not to and that it was gross and unclean and smelled bad, so it's frustrating when they're told they can't do it, but then the same people turn around a do it.
I would just like to say that idc what color you are, what your plumbing is, how you dress yourself, or what you identify as, I hate everyone equally. #peoplesuck
Well now i have to wear dreads just to piss people off..
Does that mean in future, other 'race' will be allowed to do something others couldn't
Seperate but equal everyone. If you advocate that cultural appropriation is real then ypu are an advocate for jim crow. And seperating the races.
*rips hair out*
,,,, You are the one making the rest of us look bad.
Cultures have always borrowed from one another, and that's a good thing. Segregation is wrong. Borrowing from other countries and incorporating it into yours shows that you enjoy their culture and respect it. Is it appropriation for Italian food to use pasta even though they didn't invent them? How about the fact that their biggest staple in their recipes, the tomato, was only established in the 16th century when discovering it abroad.
I hate when people apologize for stuff like this. The racists are usually the ones asking for an apology in situations like this.
This is why nobody but black people take BLM seriously. They aren’t fighting for equality, they’re fighting for superiority
I want to commit mass murder on the curremt generation and then light myself on fire.
