This was originally thought to be from German traditions however that was disproved by internet people. I however spoke with my great great great grandmother who lived to be 106. She migrated here from Czechoslovakia. I asked her about this pickle thing 35 years ago, the year before she died. She said they used to hide it around the nativity scene and told children to find it without touching. Is was a way to keep them still and quiet while the stories were read, and prayers prayed. Once a child found it they would go sit right in front of it. If they were right they would receive an extra portion of carp for their family for the next 12 days. This was meant to symbolize good fortune in the year to come. This transitioned to the Christmas trees as the years went on. The sad part is it was the story telling, the readings and the community that made it important. For every Christmas I’ve even had and will have we will continue the tradition of the Christmas pickle. on Funny Pics (Upvotes: 41)
