Actually iirc this was Brazil, it's a pharmacy, he was only shot once (fatally) by a plainclothes police officer, and each person highlighted in the frame is also a plainclothes police officer (not a random yuck with a gun). But go off I guess? on This is America (Upvotes: 41)
@Fairy Squad Mother, recently, the ozone layer, for the first time in a while, showed signs of repairing itself from the damage we'd done. The hole over Antarctica fluctuates normally, and the metrics from this particular year are misleading because the upper atmosphere is apparently abnormally warm leading to the hole being smaller than normal? (According to NASA) However, yes, within the last few years we have seen the ozone hole shrink noticeably, indicating it may be on its way to repairing itself. At current speeds, iirc, it's predicted that we'll be at pre-80's ozone levels before the end of the century. Which is much better than NASA projections that, had CFCs not been banned in the 80s, the ozone layer would've been mostly depleted by 2060 or so. on Funny Pics (Upvotes: 23)
@hasher2288, jehovah's witnesses, for one, aren't allowed to celebrate Halloween at all because it's "devil worship." They aren't even allowed to celebrate Christmas because it's originally a pagan holiday. They don't celebrate Easter for the same reason. They don't celebrate thanksgiving because "it is not a holiday that glorifies jehovah and therefore is a distraction by the devil." They basically don't celebrate anything (INCLUDING birthdays) except their own modified Easter that's on a different day, with the justification for thanksgiving being the most common for ignoring other holidays. (Source: a very good friend of mine is an ex-JW and I just quickly asked them what they WERE allowed to celebrate and the answer is pretty much nothing) Edit: yes, I am intimately aware that JW are a cult. Cults are religions, too, both by dictionary and legal definitions (sadly...) on Title (Upvotes: 23)
Peripherally related to post: today at work I was preparing for a lab during my office hours (I'm a professor) and decided to call my grandpa (mom's dad) as I worked because he hadn't been doing so well (97 is old and nearly 100% aortic stenosis leading to about 15% ventricular emptying (normal is 60-80%) is bad) and I wanted to let him know I loved him. My mom, who'd been visiting him and helping manage his hospice care, picks up and tells me he'd passed away at home literally three minutes before I'd called. We talked for a bit, cried a lot, and then I basically had to keep it together and teach a lab for three hours. I'm sharing all this because I wanted to thank this community for making a place I can go to laugh and d'aww when I need it. Thank you so much you beautiful bastards. Thank you for all the funny memes, witty comments, adorable animals, and occasional wholesome post. It made my day much more bearable. on Funny Pics (Upvotes: 20)
@Bad Boi Jesus, they did it because their picture-checking algorithms were failing to catch child porn when it was uploaded. So instead of cracking down on porn bots and pedophiles, they banned all NSFW content. They also SAID that they wouldn't flag fanart, written smut, etc. for removal, but from what I've heard a bunch of that stuff got "erroneously" removed anyway. 🤷‍♂️ on Picturism Funny (Upvotes: 20)
