@Mendicant Bias, That's flawed reasoning, simply because there was no vote taken when they were put up. There is also a disconnect between requiring a vote ostensibly to protect free speech, when the right to free speech is in the constitution to protect minority views. These aren't historical; most were put up in the 1920s - the Jim Crow era - to remind black people of their place. Your reasoning would allow "white only" signs to remain at lunch counters, because they're part of history. on I'm in (Upvotes: 15)
@Rothen555, That's a common argument, and complete nonsense. Most of these statues were erected more than 60 years after the civil war. Many were put up in the 60s. These were the Jim Crow era, and the time of the civil rights movement. In other words, they were put up to show blacks who was still the boss. History is for museums. Public land is for everyone. on I'm in (Upvotes: 14)
